About us

The current owners, Karoliina and Tapio (Frank & Vekka Ltd), started the accommodation business in 2017. The name Matin ja Maijan Majatalo was inspired by the couple’s first names.

We aim to provide unique, high-quality, homely accommodation that leaves a lasting positive impression. Each of our rooms has its own individual interior design and character. The rooms reflect a historic atmosphere while being equipped with modern comforts.

As an independent, non-chain guesthouse, we decide ourselves on the content and pricing of our services. We are responsible for the cleanliness of the guesthouse and the quality of breakfast. We take all feedback seriously and strive to exceed our guests’ expectations!

Eteläkatu Villa

The guesthouse is located in a more than 100-year-old building on a charming wooden house street right in the city center. Throughout its history, the house has served both residential and commercial purposes.

In the 1980s, the City of Hämeenlinna planned to demolish the wooden houses at Eteläkatu 3–13, built between 1919 and 1924, and convert the entire area into a parking lot. Fortunately, public discussion and initiatives from local communities helped preserve the buildings and keep the area alive and vibrant.

In the late 1990s, our building at Eteläkatu 5 was granted protected status. Since then, it has served as a toy store, a private home, and now a welcoming guesthouse.

Accessibility

We operate within the structural limitations of a historic, protected building. Unfortunately, due to the nature of the building, the guesthouse is not accessible.

Entry from the street requires climbing a few steps. We are also unable to accommodate pets due to the character of the property.

Vastuullisuus

The log house, built in 1923, already functions as a carbon store in itself. The guesthouse interior features refurbished and reused furniture and objects—only the beds have been purchased new.

We favor natural materials and Finnish products. Our bed linens, towels, and napkins are made from linen and cotton. We minimize the use of plastic and disposable products. We recycle all bottles, cardboard, paper, and batteries.

We source food as locally as possible and in sensible quantities. Breakfast is served as individually prepared portions to reduce food waste.

Soaps, shampoos, and conditioners are mainly provided in refillable pump bottles. Bathroom fixtures have been selected for low water consumption.

Our cleaning and laundry practices are environmentally conscious. We use fragrance-free detergents and rely on methods such as steam cleaning instead of strong chemicals.
